Grants had been encouraged to move to the area after seeing the potential for development there. In 1909, Miami became an independent municipality and Grant became its first mayor. In 1916, Miami won its first municipal election and Grant served as its first City Councilman. In 1924, Miami joined the United States as a state and Grant was elected its first governor. He remained in office until 1959 when he retired from politics to become general manager of the Tulsa World newspaper company.
