By 1850 it had grown into a sizable town with more than 2,000 residents; however, it struggled economically during what would come to be known as Reconstruction Era Oklahoma Territory (1861-1867). This period was marked by turmoil over slavery issues and social unrestrained by federal law or any notions of justice or equity. The result was often brutalized neighborhoods like Largo where African Americans were either sold or leased out into servitude while white men enjoyed access to education and opportunity unavailable to them elsewhere in Oklahoma Territory back then!
