Miami, Oklahoma is a city in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,715 at the 2010 census. Miami is located on the Muskogee River and is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. It is also the county seat for Tulsa County. The name "Miami" originated from a Potawatomi Indian village near present-day Miami Township on Cimarron Creek, now within Tulsa County. Spanish missionaries first arrived in this area in 1835 and named it San Miguel de Allende de los Embajadores after their patron saint, Mexico City's Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (Miguel D'Allende). In 1847, when Miami Township was organized as part of Tulsa County, its first mayor was José Gomez y Valdés (1811-1892), an American by birth who had come to Tulsa to work as a justice of the peace. On November 3, 1888, Mayor Gomez y Valdés was assassinated while attending a public meeting at his home on Northwest 24th Street in Miami. His assassin was never apprehended and no motive has been determined; however some believe that he may have been victim of political newcomer Tom Dooley's campaign promise to reduce taxes if elected president that year. The earliest reference to "Miami" being used as an intentional name for what would become Tulsa comes from newspaper articles which noted construction projects taking place near modern day Miami including: a new hospital; new homes for military personnel stationed nearby; and $5 million investment to improve irrigation systems throughout eastern OKLAHOMA Territory - all done with help from Cuban immigrants living in Tampa Bay - prior to annexation intoOKLAHOMA Territory by Cuba in 1907 following Mexican–American War hostilities there over land grants made jointly between Mexico and America east of the Rio Grande River On December 15, 1907 – less than two weeks after becoming territorial capital – newspapers reported that Cuba had annexed all or parts of five other localities withinOklahoma Territory which included Miami: Choctaw Nation Agency (now Choctaw National Forest); Fort Gibson Agency (now Guthrie Village); Delaware Agency (now Delphos); Nacogdoches Agency (now Nacogdoches Municipal Airport);and Osage Agency (now Oral Roberts University). Miami, Oklahoma is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 3,481 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Tulsa County. The name Miami comes from its location on the Miami River, which flows through the city center. The first known permanent European settlement in what is now Miami was by French traders from Quebec in 1619. A trading post and fort were founded here by Pierre Cartier in 1624 during his explorations of what is now Canada's Manitoba province. In 1796, David Thompson founded Fort Niagara on this site as part of a fur-trading expedition across North America that included exploration into present-day Mexico and Central America. In 1821, when Indian Removal Act became law, Miami was one of several towns located along the Arkansas River between Muskogee and Decatur counties to be affected. The removal process began with large groups walking off the reservations over winter into Indian Territory under orders from President James K. Polk to "disperse these savages" as part of efforts to settle new lands for white people in what is now Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming via land grants or Donation Land Acts passed by Congress following George Washington's farewell Address in 1801. By May 1830 about 2,200 Creeks had been removed from their reservation near present-day Tulsa to become settlers within territorial boundaries; most of them proceeded eastward into Indian Territory proper where they were soon absorbed into other Native American groups In 1861 Miami became an unincorporated community within Tulsa County when that county was created from parts of Muskogee and Tulsa Counties after those two counties were merged following a referendum held November 11th that year . At that time there were only two incorporated communities in Oklahoma: Tulsa City (established 1902) and Broken Arrow (established 1907). After World War II ended hostilities among various Native American tribes led to significant increases in population growth throughout much of Oklahoma including Miami as well as other cities/towns established along military bases during that time such as McAlester AFB (opened 1945), Edmond AFB (opened 1949), Lawton AFB (opened 1959), Tinker Air Force Base (opened 1967), etc.. This type of resettlement often entailed relocation away from natural water supplies such as rivers or creeks – putting residents at great risk for dehydration or water-borne illnesses posed by contaminated water sources . As a result , emergency response plans developed specifically for dealing with cases caused by displaced citizens living near military installations .. With more recent development came increased transportation options available not just within town limits but also beyond those limits thanks both to Interstate 44 which runs through town & suburbs alike & Interstate 435 providing access both north & southbound thru Oklahoman towns (& villages) making it easy for people living close enough to work downtown but far enough away not bother coming out each day .. Population growth has ledOklahoma City leaders (& Mayor Dewey Bartlett)to propose extending I-44 west past Ft Sill Military Reservation all the way towards Wichita Falls if/when future highway construction projects are completed
The Miami area was first settled by the Arapaho, who were the dominant tribe in the region. The Miami people are thought to have arrived in this area around 1810. In 1836, the Miami Indians were forced out of their land by white settlers and relocated to Indian Territory. In 1888, the United States acquired Florida from Spain as part of a deal that ended Spanish rule over Cuba and parts of South America. The US government decided that the Miami Tribe should be given land in south Florida because they had always been a strategic location for trade with Central American countries. The tribe moved to Fort Myers in 1903 and then to Homestead in 1907. In 1916, they began construction on what is now known as the Miami Arena which became home to the NBA’s Miami Heat franchise during its early years.
