This Included damaging many homes within minutes of landfall . On May 14, 1907, Miami was platted as a town by the Miami Company. The town name is derived from "Miamis" (native American) and "Oklahoma." The first post office opened in Miami on October 10, 1907. The Miami Company was organized on November 1, 1907. It became a public company with the passage of the Oklahoma Statehood Act on November 16. On December 12, 1913, the company merged with other companies to form the Tulsa-Miami Gas & Electric Corporation. In 1923, the corporation began selling electric lights in Miami and neighboring towns. In 1924, Miami also became home to what is now Tulsa's only bank - First National Bank of Tulsa. The bank served as a branch for most of Tulsa's early years until it closed in 1958. In 1951 First National Banks merged with Sam Houston National Bank to become Houston National Banks Incorporated. Houston National Banks continued operations as an independent bank until it closed its doors in 1984
