Miami, Oklahoma is a small town located in eastern Oklahoma. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The name of Miami comes from the Choctaw word "miami" meaning "place where the water flows." There were three other towns in this area before Miami was founded: Micanopy, Nowata and Seminole. Miami was originally a post office called Sackville. In 1907, it became a town when its citizens approved a resolution to that effect. At the time, there were only about 100 people living in Miami. By 1921, there were over 1,000 residents and by 1925 it had reached 5,000 inhabitants. The first school in Miami was built in 1903-04 and initially served as an elementary school for students from nearby Micanopy. In 1911-12, it became part of the Seminole County School District and served students from both Micanopy and Seminole Counties until 1947 when it merged with the Tulsa County School District (now Oklahoman Schools). In 1949-50,Miami voters adopted a resolution establishing an open-air museum to be known as "The Park". This museum later became known as "The Museum of American Indian Art" which is still open today and features more than 50% Native American art on display!
