The Miami, Oklahoma area was first settled in 1867 as a result of the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. The town of Miami was founded on the east side of what is now Tulsa County by settlers from Ohio and Indiana. The town quickly became a center for trade and commerce and soon became known as the " breadbasket" of Tulsa County. By 1870, Miami had a population of 125 people and was self-sufficient. However, due to increasing railroad construction in the area, businessactivity rapidly decreased throughout the late 1800s. In 1901, after years of petitioning by local citizens, an act was passed which granted citizenship to all Indian residents residing in Tulsa County. This event helped revive the economy and give rise to new businesses throughout the community. In 1907, Miami erected a large brick courthouse which still stands today. The building served as both courtrooms and commercial districts until it was destroyed by fire in 1957. The courthouse had significant impact on local culture and continues to be used as a museum today. In 1935, Miami annexed neighboring towns of Jenks and Owasso into its municipal jurisdiction; these annexations were made effective when Tulsa County received its current form of government under statehood two years later.
