Miami, Oklahoma is a small town located in the northeast corner of the state of Oklahoma. It was founded in 1907 by George W. MacDonald and named for Miami, Florida. The city's history began with the opening of its first gun shop in 1912. In 1916, Miami became an incorporated town and had its own police department. In 1938, Miami joined the state of Oklahoma and attained municipal status. During World War II, Miami was home to a large military airfield which produced fighter planes for the United States Air Force. This designation allowed gun owners to carry their firearms on public property without having to obtain a permit from local authorities or face registration requirements.
