Mcalester is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Arkansas River and is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1907 as a small post office, and became an incorporated town in 1955. Mcalester is named for Major General John A. McClernand, commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. The community grew rapidly after World War II, when steel production began to grow in the region. The economy has been based on agriculture since the early 20th century; now it is a major center for commerce and industry. Manufacturing has also become significant in recent years, with businesses such as Alcoa (Aluminum), Midland Airlines (Air transportation), Summit Books (bookstore), JBL Boomers (audio equipment) and several clothing companies among those that have founded or continue to operate in Mcalester.
