In 1903, Mcalester, Oklahoma was founded by two men who were entrepreneurs in the oil business. They named their business “Mcalester Oil and Gas” after their home town of McAlester, Kansas. In 1909, they opened a refining and marketing plant in McAlester and began to sell gasoline products to local residents and truck drivers. The company prospered until the beginning of World War I when production was suspended for lack of fuel. After the war, the company resumed production with new technology but lost its status as an industry leader in the post-war years. In 1926 it merged with another oil company to form American Petroleum Corporation which remained mired in financial difficulties until it went bankrupt in 1934. The failure of American Petroleum Corporation led to a wave of mergers among small firms throughout Oklahoma during the 1930s and 1940s; this coincided with statewide efforts by state officials to develop major oil resources. This pattern continued into the postwar period as industry consolidation increased pressure on state budgets while smaller companies struggled against larger competitors. By 1959, only five percent of all Tulsa-based businesses were engaged in mining or processing mineral rights; these operations accounted for less than one percent of total production that year. Kazakhstan’s purchase of Uralmash SA (later Uralsat) led to significant changes within Russian energy policy during the 1990s and 2000s; this has had a substantive impact on Tulsa’s energy sector The history of Mcalester Oil and Gas is reflective of much that has happened within Tulsa-the city itself has been reborn as an international center for technology, education, trade and commerce-and its surroundings have changed dramatically over time too: from rural hinterlands into one of Tulsa’s most vibrant neighborhoods today. Today’s economy is based upon education, transportation and entertainment services; manufacturing; agriculture; natural resources; service industries such as construction and retail trade; and professional, scientific, and medical services to a growing metropolitan area that includes downtown Tulsa (home to more than 50 percent of the current metroplex population) as well as OKC (the largest city in Oklahoma)
