Mcalester is a small town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stephens County. The first settler in what is now Mcalester was A.S. Poindexter in 1881. He and his family were the first to reside here when Stephens County was organized on November 3, 1907 from portions of Canadian County. The town began as a two-room log cabin and grew slowly until it had a population of about 20 people in 1909. In 1912, the town built its first schoolhouse and also established firewood mills that produced lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1922, construction began on a campaign road that would eventually become US Highway 24 (now State Route 66). The road connected Mcalester with Tulsa and other nearby communities such as Jenks and Levelland. The new highway increased commerce in the community while providing access to hunting, fishing, and farmland around the area. A post office was established inMcalester on December 16, 1914; it became an important link between local residents and those living farther away via mail delivery service. By 1936, Mcalesters had reached a population of 500 people thanks to growth in farming industry along with expanded retail opportunities led by Laughlin’s Hardware Store which opened its doors in 1929 across from High School #2 . Laughlin’s success spawned several other businesses over time including Krystal restaurant (opened 1933), Hometown Buffet (1946), Piggly Wiggly convenience store (1949), First National Bank (1953) – all located within easy walking distance of each other making Mcalesters one of the most vibrant towns ever founded within Stephens County! During these years there were also numerous social events held throughout the community such as dances at churches or plays at barns which helped keep things lively during an often slower paced period during history! Today we can still see many reminders of this past including streetlights timed to match music played live on stage during shows at various venues throughout downtown!
