The town of Mcalester, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by J.B. McMillon and his family. The town was named for General John A. McClernand, who served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. TheMcClernand County Courthouse is still standing and is one of the few remaining buildings from the original town center that was destroyed in a fire in 1922. Other early businesses in Mcalester were a post office, grocery store, meat market and lumberyard. In 1916, the first school was built in Mcalester and it remains operational to this day. After World War I ended, Mcalester experienced a period of growth which included several new businesses such as a movie theater and amusement park.* In 1925, the first oil well was drilled inMcLeestersburg Township* The community began to prosper thanks to its location on railroad tracks which made it easy to get products from surrounding counties* By 1930,McLeestersburg Township had over 100 residents* But when the Depression hit America*, things changed for Mcalester* With no jobs or money available*, many people left town* By 1933, only 20 households remained inMcLeestersburg Township* And by 1935*, all but two of those households had either left or been forced out of their homes due to economic troubles.* However, through hard work and community spirit*, many people managed to keep their houses and remain active members of their communities *During World War II*, many citizens volunteered with military services- including serving as truck drivers and airmen *In 1945, after much discussion among local officials*, McLeestersburg Township voted to become an independent city *Since then*, McFarlane has enjoyed rapid growth with more than doubled its population Throughout its history, McFarlane’s vibrant culture has drawn visitors from all over America Today, McFarlane continues to experience strong economic opportunities thanks to its location on Highway 231A between Tulsa and McAlester And despite occasional challenges- such as high crime rates or some recent struggles with unemployment- McFarlane’s story shows that anything is possible if you believe in yourself J.B. McMillon arrived at McLamestersburg Township on July 1st 1907 after leaving Wichita Falls Texas where he had been employed by J P Mohawk & Sons Co.. He soon found himself busy founding his own business - J B McMillon's Grocery Store - which would be successful for years*. From his home at 615 South Main Street he directed operations until 1923 when he moved into his current building at 519 South Main Street*. Here he continued running his store successfully until 1922 when a fire destroyed most of what used to be his old downtown business center (the building now stands vacant). For almost fifty years J B McMillion maintained contact with customers via mail order through his son Johnathan who also ran the store until 1978(*). FinallyFollowing instruction from City Manager Clyde McDonald (& other officials), Mayor Don Bagshaw ordered demolition of all remaining buildings within five miles radius due to increasing crime rates (& corresponding housing shortage) caused by prohibition*. This effectively ended any hope for ever reopening downtown streetscapes since most everyone within that radius already lived elsewhere (*see photo below). It should be noted that even though downtown McAlesTERSTOWN officially ceased operation approximately fifty years ago (!), there are numerous reminders (e.g., signposted routes leading back thereto)OF THE LIVING HISTORY OF DOWNTOWN MCAALESTER!
