However, by 1937-38 Mcalester had fallen victim to economic recession that caused its economy to decline again. As a result of this downturn, many residents left town and its buildings were destroyed over time. By 1940-41 only 8% of the original population remained in Mcalester while its downtown was abandoned completely. Despite this decline, however, some efforts have been made to revive downtown since its abandonment including renovation projects which have resulted in some new businesses opening up inside old buildings and creating a renewed interest in Mcalesters history and culture
