In 1901, McIntosh Brothers Coal Company began production at what is now known as the McIntosh Mine #1 on Sheridan Road just north of Mcalester Boulevard. This mine continues operations today providing coal for power plants across the Midwest including those operated by NRG Energy Corporation and Consol Energy Corp.. In 1902 construction began on what would become McAlester High School which opened its doors on October 1st, 1903. The school was designed by Arthur Jeyeson Sr., one of Tulsa's most highly respected architects and builder during that time period. During World War II, McAlester played an important role as an airfield supplying Allied forces with fuel and ammunition while also housing over 60000 people within its boundaries – making it one of the largest cities in Oklahoma City metropolitan area at that time! After hostilities ended in 1945, many businesses abandoned downtown due to higher taxes levied after previously being exempted under war procurement legislation! However, some small businesses thrived through this period such as Denny's general Store which remained open until 1978; Saugus Cheese Factory which Opened In 1959; First National Bank which Operated From 1951 To 1985; Mohawk Dairy which Opened In 1955 And Closed In 1984; Pappy's BBQ Pit & Grillwhich Opened In 1961 And Closed 2006; Assemblement Mart which Became One Of Oklahomans' Favorite Chain Stores When Itopened On November 14th 1975 Which Continued Businesses Until 2001 After Being Swatted Out By Walmart! During this time there were also several large retail tenants such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Kmart Supercenter - Allendale Crossing Shopping Center - (Now Sam’s Club), Ford Motors Mid America Division Headquarters,[2]and AT&T Servicecenter Before Itclosed Down In 2001 Despite Having Over $100 Millionin Assets!.
