Mcalester, Oklahoma is a city in east-central Oklahoma. The population was 381 at the 2010 census and 495 at the 2013 estimate. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Mcalester were French traders in 1796, who named it "Maclester". In 1907, the town was founded by Major General George Armstrong Custer's regiment during his Indian Wars campaign. After World War I, the railroad arrived and moved the community from its original location on the left bank of White River to its present site on what is now North Main Street. The post office opened in 1903. From 1910 until 1957, Mcalester was home to two college presidents: James Moulton Price and Noble Silliman Morrison. When Price resigned to become president of Baylor University (now Texas A&M University), Morrison became interim president until Price could be re-elected as chancellor at Baylor in late 1911. When Price died suddenly after a long illness in 1913, Morrison succeeded him as university president and served for 14 years; he is also known for establishing Waco Hall as Baylor's main research facility.
