Mcalester, Oklahoma is a town in Roosevelt County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The name "Mcalester" comes from an early settler named McAllister. The first post office for Mcalester was established in 1886. In 1907, the town became the county seat of Roosevelt County and has been since then. The town was founded on November 3, 1907 by Captured Indian Chief Long Cloud and his wife Sacagawea as a trading post near present-day Muskogee National Forest northwest of McAlester. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1912; the jail burned down in 1924 but was rebuilt and enlarged in 1928. The first school was opened in 1909; a new high school opened in 1962 and Stonington Elementary School merged with it in 1984; both schools are now located within McAlester High School boundaries. In 1965, McAlester annexed what is today Rochelle Township to its westward extent; this annexation created a large residential area that still surrounds the downtown core of McAlestersville today (though some portions have been annexed back into McAlestersville). As nearby towns grew larger and outgrew their mailing addresses (e.g., Jenks), McFarlane began issuing postage stamps bearing only one word--"McAlesTER," without any other designations or location information (valid until 1983). This practice continued until 1987 when duplicate stamps were issued with Plains Air Force Base Mental Health Center–Oklahoma City address as well as "Townsend Heights." The town of Mcalester, Oklahoma is located in the counties of Haskell and Noble. The population was 2,291 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1907 by men from Dubuque, Iowa. It became a city in 1959. The name comes from George Washington McCaleb, who homesteaded land in what is now Mcalester. The McCaleb family had a ranching business that operated for many years. In 1907, they decided to move to Oklahoma and establish a new community here. They named their new community after George Washington McCaleb, who had been born there in 1851. He had come to the United States in 1869 as part of the Overland Mail caravan and settled on land near present-day McAlester. In 1959, Mcalester merged with Haskell to become one municipality covering all of Haskell County and most of Noble County as well. At that time, it also included parts of Canadian County and east-central Tulsa County
On July 1, 1907, Mcalester was founded as a small town by pioneers. The town quickly grew and became a center of commerce and culture in the region. In 1925, Mcalester became the first city in Oklahoma Territory to be elected to statehood. The city continued to grow and expand its boundaries until it reached its current size on January 3, 1907.
