Macalester passed away and his son, Donald M., became the company's president. Duringdonald M.'s presidency, the company grew even more successful and it became one of America's leading optical manufacturers. In 1969, Donald M.'s son-in-law, Dean Wahlquist took over as president and led the company into new eras of success. Under Dean Wahlquist's leadership, Mcalesters Optical Manufacturing Company became an international leader in optics production with products available in many languages. In 2000, Mcalester Optical Manufacturing Company merged with two other American companies to form a new multi-national corporation named "Optical Industries Corporation."

It was later renamed McCaleb Elementary School after her husband, also named William McAlester. The school district was formed in 1907 when the towns of Grady and McAlester merged into one city. At that time, Mcalester had a population of just under 1,000 people and consisted only of a single street corner with four houses. The post office located at 9th and Elm Streets servingMcalesters first began service on July 5, 1893 In 1912, construction began on what is now known as Main Street which led to the growth of the city center that exists today thanks to infrastructure investment from businesses and citizens alike
On July 4, 1907, the Town of Mcalester was organized. It grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers and businesses. The town had two churches and a school by 1912. In 1916, the town elected its first Mayor, Wm. Henson. In 1923, the Oklahoma State Highway Commission surveyed the town and recommended that it become an OKC suburb. The city council accepted the recommendation and changed its name to Mcalester in 1927. The city's population reached 5,000 in 1941 but declined to 3,500 by 1951 due to decreasing real estate values and increased commuting from McAlester for jobs in OKC. In 1964-1966 the city council enacted ordinances which limited smoking on public property within 500 feet of City Hall or any other government building; this ordinance was repealed in 1969 when Interstate 40 was built through downtown McAlester
