In addition to its phosphate industry reliance, Mcalester also fields other businesses such as trucking and construction services; however, since 2000 it has begun to decline in importance due to increased competition from Tulsa and other nearby cities with more established industries. This decline began when oil production shifted from underground to surface mining; along with hydraulic fracturing (fracking) becoming more common due to improvements in technology, this led to an increase in pollution from wells and associated processing facilities as well as dust clouds that affected nearby residents for hours upon days on end during fracking operations - one particularly egregious example taking place on July 17th 2014 when particles measuring over 0.3 micrograms per cubic metre were reported emanating from an active Well Drilling Site situated within 1 km of the home of OSHA inspector Donny Hopkins who resided adjacent to that site while monitoring fluid migration rates... even though he could plainly see no evidence whatsoever of any type being migrated! 1

As a result of this program, Mcalester became one of the many cities that were founded as part of this initiative. One of McFarlane's successors as mayor, Wernher Loehr, helped promote growth within the city and worked to improve infrastructure such as streetlights and sewers. In 1990, McFarlane died at age 93 years old and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery adjacent to George Washington University
