Since the early days of firearms, holster design has been a critical part of the overall shooting experience. In Mcalester, Oklahoma, that tradition continues to this day with many of the city's businesses and citizens alike purchasing and using holsters for their personal firearms. One such businesses is Bill's Pistol Shoppe which has been in business since 1948. It was here that I first met Mr. Bill (the owner) and began my love affair with handguns. From there, I followed him throughout his years-both as an employee and a customer-to learn more about his unique holsters and their importance to the shooting community in Mcalester. Throughout my visits, I would always ask Mr. Bill about his favorite handgun harness designs or holster models from his time working at Bill's Pistol Shoppe. He was always happy to share some old favorites or new designs he had just designed himself-proudly displaying them on his busy shop floor! The town of Mcalester, Oklahoma is located in northeastern Oklahoma, on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town was founded in 1907 bymen of Wichita, Kansas, who were looking for a new home after their city was destroyed by a fire. The men named the town after themselves and built a small village around it. In 1915, the men donated 160 acres (6 km²) of land to the local school District, which became Mcalester Elementary School. In 1932, the town designated a green space along its centerline as an open-air park. The park has been used for public recreation since then. In 1907, brothers Emmett and Frank McDonald opened up a successful general store in what is now Mcalester. They quickly became well-known throughout Wichita because they sold goods at very low prices and made much money from merchandizing such items as clothes and hardware. The McDonalds continue to own and operate their business until it closed in 1951. Today there are several surviving buildings from that time including theMcDonald House which is on display at Wichita State University's Kanzler Museum; and also some smaller businesses which still use part or all of their original flooring/ ceilings/apartments from that time period including A&P grocery store #1 & #2 on 3rd Street NW; First National Bank building (now DPS Building); Comfort Inn; Grain Elevator;BT Tower (now tower block), etc.; all within walking distance of each other). The first high school teaching staff arrived in Mcalester in 1915 when Drury High School opened nearby with grades 9-12 students. That same year saw construction begin on what would become Central High School – one of only two high schools serving McDowell County at that time! Central soon outgrew its facilities so additional classrooms were added over time until finally becoming McDowell County’s only high school with 14th through 16th grade students in 1963 when Central Junior College began operations adjacent to Central High School! By 1957Central had reached population size enough to warrant annexation into neighboring Durant so Durant City Schools operated Central until 1978 when centralisdeaded as its own independent municipality! Today many people identify themselves as “McDowellites” due to our strong connection to this community during those years! During World War II various factories were located nearby like Armour Corporation plant #5 on East Canadian Road just outside town limits – providing employment for many residents before and after the war. After Tulsa was bombed during WWII most residents fled eastward towards McAlester where they could be safe from aerial raids going off every day without warning or notice! After Tulsa’s devastation many people decided not to rebuild there but instead move back into McAlester where they could live relatively undamaged! Many old homes still stand today within walking distance either of downtown McAlester or central square surrounded by older sectional homes dating back to pre-war days!!! Come explore these neighborhoods today while you can!!
