In 1915, McAlester became part of Tulsa metropolitan area and lost its independence; however, it continued to be governed by Bledsoe County officials until 1959 when Tulsa incorporated as its own city. In 1997, McAlester lost jurisdiction over all of Bledsoe County following an administrative move made by then-County Commissioner Walt Frazier with the goal of creating one consolidated government for all Oklahomas counties within Tulsa metropolitan area (the now defunct OKC metropolitan area). This move outraged many residents who felt their community would still retain its separate identity even if they no longer lived within Tulsa's boundaries
