In 1907, the town of Mcalester, Oklahoma was founded by a rancher named J.W. Hennessey on land that once belonged to the Kiowa and Apache nations. After World War II, business slowed down as many residents left for jobs outside Mcalester due to Economic Depression conditions then began respawning when oil discoveries started making McAlesters economy once again thrive during the late 1940s through early 1960s with oil production increasing by fifty percent every year which generated increased job opportunities for local citizens including truck drivers and mechanics handling rigs out near Permian Basin fields while local farmers raised crops on460-acre (200ha) farmsteads adjacent to Oil Field #2 operated by Kerr McGee & Co.. With growth came automobiles which led to steady building construction over what had been an agricultural community; medium-sized homes were replaced by larger dwellings starting around 1950 while small shops and restaurants closed up shop or moved away during this time period leaving only one large grocery store remaining open until it closed its doors permanently c 1970 along with other major businesses including First National Bank that merged with American Express Company becoming First National/American Express also headquartered downtown becoming McAlesters second largest employer after Tulsa State Fairgrounds but long since discontinued as both industries have become predominantly technological based and largely outsourced locally although some high-tech manufacturing still takes place such as aircraft maintenance facilities handled locally by Plains Alloys Incorporated which is located just east of McAlesters courthouse complex off I-40 exit 219 south from US 65 exits 217A/217B west from I-40 exit 221 north from US 65 exits 232A/232B throughout much of McAlesters core downtown area although surrounding areas have seen little recent development aside from a few small apartments housing numerous employees at various technology companies located nearby particularly near I-40 exit 257 south from US 65exit 256 west thence Interstate 40 access point known formally as Business Districtsouthwest corner city limits
