The town of Mcalester, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by John H. McAlester and his wife, Florence. The McAlesters were farmers who moved from the eastern United States to western Oklahoma to start a new life. They named their town after their father, James McAlester, who had also arrived in the area in 1907. In 1915, the McAlesters donated land for a Methodist church and school. The first building on the site was built that year. In 1923, the town name was changed to Mcalester after General George Custer's death in battle near McClellan County, Kansas.
