In 1907, the town of Mcalester was founded on a ranch by John Forbes. The town was named after Samuel H. McAllister, who donated the land to the town in memory of his wife and children. The first settlers were white men, but by 1912 there were also several African American families living in Mcalester. In 1916, the townsite was surveyed and platted. A post office was established inMcalester on July 1, 1916. The town had a population of about 50 people when it became a city in 1920. The years following World War I saw an increase in oil production in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, which led to an increased demand for workers for these cities. In 1925, the US Government offered a $5 million contract to build two new airports near Tulsa and McAlester – one for commercial airlines and one for military use. This would create jobs for local residents as well as provide much-needed infrastructure development throughout Oklahoma City and Tulsa at this time. With an increasing number of businesses coming intotown from out of state, Mcalester began to grow into its present form as a city with over 100,000 residents in 1950.Over time, McAlester has become home to many famous people including former President George W Bush (George H W) and professional athletes such as Mike Tyson or LeBron James (Lenny Bruce).
