Mcalester was founded in 1907 by J. W. Harper and his wife, Belle Harriman Harper. The town became a cotton center after the discovery of large tracts of cotton near the town. The Harpers also developed a grocery store and post office in Mcalester. In 1911, the town voted to become a city, and it did so in 1912. The city had an population of about 100 people when it became a city, and it grew to around 350 people by 1970.
