In 1911, Mcalester, Oklahoma was the first town in the United States to pass a gun law. The ordinance required all citizens to carry a gun at all times and prohibited carrying any firearms without a license. This law did not take long to become effective; by January 1912, everyone in the city had either a gun or knew how to use it. In that year, there were only two murders in Mcalester and no robberies or burglaries. The following year saw an increase in crime; however, this was due largely to gang violence instead of firearms being used lawfully.Gun laws became more relaxed in America as violence decreased and stricter regulations were put into place. By 1930, Mcalester had dropped its prohibition on guns and passed an ordinance requiring permits for handguns only. This allowed for more responsible handgun ownership and helped reduce crime overall. The repeal of Prohibition also led to an increase in alcohol sales which contributed to another decrease in crime rates over the next few years. Mcalester, Oklahoma is a small town located in southern Oklahoma. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa-Mulberry, OK Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by pioneers in 1907. At that time, it was known as Lawton. In 1912, the name changed to McAlester and then to Mcalester in 1915 when it became a city. The city’s first mayor was John A. McAlester. Mcalester is home to the McAlester Air Force Base which serves as an important headquarters for defense contractors across the United States and abroad. It also has a number of businesses including two casinos and several military installations including Fort Riley Army Base and Tinker AFB. The local economy relies heavily on agriculture, manufacturing and service sectors such as healthcare and education which are all major employers in the area.

The town of Mcalester, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by George W. McDonald and his wife Lettie. The community grew rapidly due to the oil boom in the 1920s and 1930s, and it soon boasted a population of over 1,000 people. The town's heyday came during World War II, when it became one of the most important military centers in the Midwest. After the war, Mcalester experienced rapid growth as a result of its role as an industrial center. In the early 21st century, however, Mcalester has seen significant decline both economically and politically. Today, it is only a small fishing village with fewer than 100 residents.
In 1907, the town of Mcalester was platted and named in honor of Senator Charles H. McAllister. The town is located on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1915, a post office was established in Mcalester and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1934. The first store in the town opened on Main Street on October 1, 1915. The first telephone service arrived in Mcalester on November 5, 1915. In 1916, a school was built and remained operational until it closed in 1922. One of the earliest businesses to open within the town limits was an ice cream parlor called "The Fenton" which operated from 1917 to 1919. On December 2, 1917, a fire destroyed most of the business at "The Fenton". A new store, called "The McKnight", opened on Main Street adjacent to the old school building on January 3, 1918 and continued operations until it closed in 1949. An additional business which opened during this time frame was a dry goods store known as "The Sweet Shop". This business operated from 1918-1935 before closing down due to financial problems. In 1935, another post office called "McKenzie" opened within the town limits after being established by mail carrier Sallie McKenzie with assistance from her father John McKenzie Sr.. This post office served as an interim location until its closure in 1955 when all mail services were moved to Tulsa airport(). On November 9th, 1938 Oklahoma Statehood was granted to Oklahoma by President Franklin D Roosevelt with written confirmation by Governor George Wickersham Jr.. On December 17th following that date local residents voted overwhelmingly (over 90% yes) for incorporation into McAlester County government as a municipal entity under state laws passed two days earlier! Incorporation took place January 1st 1939 under charter number X-8776 through local citizens Gerard Jansen (candidate), Harry Lamm (vice president), Mrs Floyd Heidegger (secretary) and Vernon Eriksen (councilman). From this point forward McAlester County became one of only three counties west of Wichita Falls that did not abolished their county government upon statehood! With statehood came many changes for McAlester County including: enlargement of sheriff’s department; addition of justice court; establishment of highway departments; addition of parks department; creation/establishment of several water district administrations; increase/ enhancement/ systematic alteration/modernization/replication etc... various governmental functions were organized or consolidated into newly created agencies or Departments thereby minimizing duplication or wastefulness throughout our county government system! It would be inaccurate(and unwise)to try listing every conceivable change & function associated with statehood because such an undertaking would be quite lengthy & extensive! Suffice it to say that during these early years much work had to be done quickly & efficiently without wasting valuable resources!!
