The first post office in Mcalester was established in 1881. The name of the town changed several times until it finally became Mcalester on November 4, 1907. At that time, McAlester became the principal city of Tulsa County and has since been one of its most important locales. The history ofMcalester begins with fascinating stories about pioneer life and even earlier cultures that have lived there. One such culture is the Wichita people, who were forcibly removed from their ancestral homes in Kansas in 1865 and settled near McAlester Creek on what is now called Farmington Hills Road. For many years they engaged in agricultural pursuits which earned them good reputation among other Indian groups living around Tulsa at that time. In 1898, when Oklahoma became a state, McAlester became its capital and has continued to be so ever since. The city experienced some impressive growth during its early days as a municipal center for all of Tulsa County with over 11,000 residents living therein in 1900; however, World War I caused much destruction within the city limits and forced the closure of many businesses throughout 1917-1918 (the war had an especially harsh effect on cities located along transportation routes). This did not prevent McAlesters growth though as more businesses reopened after 1919 began to bring back jobs lost during wartime closures or due to economic conditions elsewhere in Oklahoma City at that time (many men had enlisted in WWI while still working at home). Unfortunately, this period also saw racism becoming increasingly rampant within both McAlesTER’s governmental authorities as well as within society at large – culminating with lynching incidents which took place between 1923-1927 (primarily against black citizens) although various efforts were made thereafter to address these issues). After World War II ended with America’s entry into World War II itself on December 7th 1941 thanks largely to President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal policies (and ensuing military mobilization), McAlesters population reached over 20,000 once again by 1945 according to census data – making it one of America’s largest cities by this point! However tragically such progress would come To an abrupt halt less than two months later when bombing raids commenced by U.S Army Air Forces against Hiroshima just short distance away causing virtually total devastation including scores of downtown business buildings destroyed or damaged beyond use; immediately following which Japan entered World War II officially become an ally providing support needed for American forces fighting alongside their Axis opponent!) Postwar adjustments ensued including rapid growth rates through 1950 (+50%) before slowly leveling off thereafter until accelerating again beginning in 1975 (+30%). This recent spurt may be linked partly historically to oil production activities taking place adjacent thereto given increased truck traffic associated therewith; but also reflects growing awareness nationally and locally amongst various entrepreneurs/business ownersrelative thereto) Today much remains unchanged despite current “frequent extreme weather events” such as tornados etc., although some aspects have become markedly more diverse including energy production facilities nearby having relocated outstripping local demand thereby reducing impact upon surrounding neighborhoods hitherto!
