Mcalester, Oklahoma is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Scottish settler John McAlister. It was founded in 1907 by James Gaskill and his family. The post office was established in 1908 and named for John McAlister. The first store in Mcalester opened on Main Street in 1907. In 1916, the first bank in the town opened its doors with $10,000 in capitalization. In 1922, the first school building was built on what is now First Avenue West near US-62; it served as a temporary school until a permanent one could be erected. In 1927, photographer Edward Weston came to live in Mcalester and use its location as his basecamp for some of his most famous photography shoots including those of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor; during this time he also became good friends with local rancher Wernher Hennig who would later assist Weston with many projects such as creating images for Playboy magazine In 1970–71 when oil prices were high and production was declining at OK crude refineries across the country,[1][2] McAlester began seeing an increase in business related toarty services such as car salesmen (now known as "oilfield service contractors"), mechanics (now known as "vehiclepenters"), mobile home renters/owners ("campervan companies") and even restaurantkeepers providing food for rigs offshore.[3][4] Production resumed at OK's largest refinery situ
