The town was founded by settlers from Illinois in 1881. In 1907, Mcalester became one of the first towns in Payne County to be incorporated as a village. The name "Mcalester" is derived from the Indian word "machete," which means "to cut or remove wood." The downtown district was built on land donated by Mrs. John Pritchard and Mr. Harry Ladd and it opened to the public in 1932. The community hall also served as the county government building until 2003 when it was replaced by the present courthouse complex. This organization helped change the way many people view space exploration by providing funding for new technology development within NASA while also providing opportunities for people all over America to experience spaceflight. It is truly remarkable that Henry McAlester was able to make such a significant impact on American history despite being only one man.
The first known permanent white settlement in the area was on the east side of Mcalester, now known as Tulsa, in 1836. A fort was built at this location and named Fort Gibson after General Andrew Jackson. In 1839, another white settlement, called Prairie du Chien, was founded on the west side of Mcalester. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1845, an act of Congress organized Oklahoma Territory and named it for George Washington Carver who had donated land to the territory. The Territorial Legislature also designated October 4th as its official day of creation.
