In 1927, local citizens offered $1 million to create a water supply system for McAlester and other towns along the Arkansas River basin. The first water main was built through McalesTER in 1930 and service began that year. The town's name came from its location at one end of what would become Guthrie Boulevard east of McAlestershire Road (now US-580). Guthrie Boulevard runs north-south through downtown McAlestershire before intersecting with state Route 59 just east of town limits and then continuing eastward into Haskell County
