The town was named for General Hugh Hays, who had served as a U.S. Army officer inOklahoma during the American Civil War and later became secretary of war under President Abraham Lincoln. The first store inMcalester opened in 1909 and soon became a popular stop for travelers on their way to Indian Territory or Kansas City. In 1912, Mcalester incorporated as a city and began to develop its own infrastructure such as an municipal water system and electric lights. In 1916, the city built its first school and within two years it had established itself as one of the largest cities in Oklahoma Territory with a population of over 25,000 people. By 1922, Mcalester had become one of the most important towns in eastern Oklahoma; it was also one of the few Ural Cities left standing after World War I. During World War II, Mcalester played an important role inthe developmentofthe aircraft industry in northeastern Oklahoma; many local businesses were instrumentalin supplying essential materials for fighter planes build by Boeing and Lockheed Martin aircraft manufacturers throughout that period. The post-war decades saw heavy growth for Mcalestera; by 1970, its population had reached over 100,000 people and it continued to grow rapidly until its incorporation into Tulsa County seat in 1978 - making it one of only a handful counties statewide which has experienced continual population growth since then (the others being Cimarron County and Muskogee County). Today,Mcalestera is home to some of Tulsa's most prosperous neighborhoods - including Midtown West (a high-rise redevelopment project located near downtown), Englewood Village Shopping Center/Mall (an upscale mall located adjacent to Interstate 35), Park Meadows/University Towers (a large housing development located adjacent to US Highway 67), etc.; while still remaining an IRA bastion - home to numerous small businesses throughout much of its core areavirtually unchanged from when it formed part of Tulsa County more than 60 years ago
Mcalester, Oklahoma is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Mcalester were the Kiowa and Apache Native Americans. A post office called McKinley was established in 1887, and remained in operation until 1907. The townsite was named after General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment which fought at Little Bighorn on July 24, 1885. In 1904, a group of merchants and civic leaders decided to build a new city on the east side of Haskell County due to its potential as an agricultural center with good water resources and easy access to railroad transportation. They named the city Mcalester after General Major James G. McAllister who had led them during the American Civil War (1861- 1865). The city was founded on November 3, 1904 by citizens from around Haskell Counties including McAlester and Muskogee City. The original downtown district included three blocks long ofCommercial Street between Elm and Washington Streets; two blocks long of State Avenue between Elm and Post Alley; two blocks long of Center Street between Elm and Main Street; one block long of Broadway between Elm and Washington Streets; one block wide of Hillcrest Boulevard between Center Street and Main Street; four small lots located along Commercial Street west of Broadway for future commercial development; all together comprising over . This original downtown district would eventually be demolished in 1957 when most businesses moved out into north side streets near Interstate 65 while less important buildings remain today such as government buildings used by state troopers barracks as well as old Methodist churches which are still used for worship today although they no longer have their steeple! This story does not end there however because later that year another group decided to build another city just south east (now Osage) also named after General James G McAllister with plans to expand westward across Creek Nation into what is now Tulsa proper! However this second city never came to fruition either because it lacked a central location or money from those involved so it’s hard to say for sure why it didn’t take off but we do know that some sort of connection must have existed because both cities bear his name! Most likely this second attempt at buildingMcallistercitywasbecauseofthegrowingpopulationofTulsaandtheneedto ExpandWestwardacrossCreekNationontoWhatIsNowTulsa proper!
