In 1984, State Route 471 (now Interstate 40) was built through the center of town between I-40 and US 90/ OK-27; this made McalesTERt one of only a few towns along that route without any direct connection to those highways outside of transient use or when passing through onramps/interchanges. In 1990, Iron Mountain Brewing Company opened its doors in downtown McAlesTERt; it would become one of McAlesTERt's most popular tourist attractions.
