The Beginnings: John Smeaton's Original Factory In 1854, John Smeaton founded Smith & Wesson Ammo Company to produce firearms and other munitions at its then-new factory on Third Street in downtown McAlester. In those early days, only blacksmiths were employed at Smith & Wesson Ammo Company; firearms manufacturing was done by hand using old cannons and other artillery bits as parts. Smith & Wesson Ammo became one of America's most successful manufacturers thanks to its innovative products and competitive pricing. With no competition on the market at that time, Smith & Wesson ammo quickly became an industry leader. Smith&Wesson Ammunitions Goes Global: 1900-1910 In 1903, John Smeaton decided it was time for his company to expand into new markets outside of America. He bought out his brother-in-law's share in Bethlehem Steel Corporation and moved operations from McAlester to Bethlehem Township near Philadelphia until 1915 when he sold everything back to McAlester residents for $2 million dollars (the purchase price minus depreciation from years prior). At this point, Smith&Wesson Ammunition had become a worldwide powerhouse with branches all over the world! On October 1st 1910- just two years afterJohnSmeaton established his empire as America’s leading ammunition manufacturer- Remington Arms Co., Incorporated divisions purchased all assets of Smith&Wesson Ammunition Corp., making it an official subsidiary of Remington Arms Co., Incorporated! This event marked the beginning of an era where American gunmakers would partner up with European companies to bring their latest innovation and technology back into our country! It also signaled an end to one period in history where American manufacturers controlled almost every aspect of ammunition production!

The town was established in 1907 by settlers from Illinois and Kansas who named it for John F. McAllister, a rancher and attorney. The town became a stop on the Chisholm Trail when the trail crossed through Haskell County. A post office been established in 1907, and served until 1931. In 1951, Mcalester got its own school district which left Haskell County to form its own school district with its own superintendent and budgeting methods. The name of the new school district was changed to Mcalester-Haskell School District in 1969 after serving as the home of both schools for over 50 years until they merged into one district in 2001 under current Superintendent Drayton Witherspoon's leadership and direction Today Mcalester is considered an important cultural center within Tulsa due to its rich history as well as its many various festivals that take place throughout the year including Oktoberfest (the largest such event held outside Chicago), Christmasfest (one of Tulsa's most popular events), Folklore Festival (an annual music festival), Harvest Fest (a food festival) as well as rodeo events like Stockyards Stampede & Western Expo also taking place annually . There are also several art galleries located throughout town along with a variety of stores/restaurants/bars/libraries etc catering to residents and visitors alike making it one of busiest small towns in northwestern Oklahoma

On November 20, 1907, Mcalester was founded by Judge John T. McGee and Dr. Wm. H. Keller as a town in the Medicine Bow range of oil wells. The town rapidly grew and soon became an important center for oil production in the area. In 1923, Mcalester became the county seat of McKinney County and has continued to serve that purpose ever since.
