On January 2, 1935, Republic Steel Company merged with Armour & Co., creating what would become one of America's largest steel companies. Republic Steel declined to merge with United States Steel because United States Steel considered Republic Steel a junior partner in their company hierarchy and did not want to give up control over its plants and workers; this caused tension between Republic and United States Steel for many years until finally resolved by 1949 when United StatesSteel merged into American Bridge Corporation

In 1907, they built a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River and named it Mcalester after their purchase of the land. The first post office was opened in Mcalester on November 10, 1907. The following year, Mr. McFarlane built a school for students in his own property which he called McKeesport High School. By 1919,McFarlane had purchased additional property and moved his school to its present location on December 6th at 7th Street and Washington Avenue. From 1922-1927,McFarlane served as Mayor of Mcalester with distinction under two terms; he was elected unopposed each time due to term limitsimposed by the Oklahoma Legislature at that time. In 1927, Mrorchard donated $50000 to establish the University of Central Oklahoma which became one of America's most successful universities with campuses throughout OKLAHOMA Territory including McAlesters (now Tulsa) campus located at what is now Oral Roberts University; Muskogee (now Guthrie); Ponca City (now Yukon); Jenks; Anadarko; Lawton; Cushing ;and Edmondson counties In 1929-1930, Mrs.[Mrs.] McFarlane organized a local chapter of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity through her husband's connection with that organization In 1932-1933 ,Mr[Mr.] McFarlane donated an acreage along Highway 66 north of McAlesters for use as an agricultural college fairgrounds known then as Fairview Agricultural College Now known as Oklahoma State University
