Lawton was founded in 1881 by E. W. Lawton and his brother, A. C. Lawton. It became a city in 1907 and a county in 1907. The city of Lawton was named for E. W. Lawton and the county name was approved by the Oklahoma Legislature on May 10, 1907, based on recommendations from Judge J H Brougham of the District Court for Lincoln County. The courthouse at 14th Street and Broadway served as the original seat of government until 1925 when it moved to its present location at 133rd Avenue and McGregor Road. The population of Lawton peaked at 30,000 in 1920 but declined rapidly after World War I due to loss of jobs in the war effort and related economic hardships; it reached 15,000 only in 1930 before declining again to 10,000 by 1940. In 1950, however, the population had recovered to 20,000 thanks to rapid growth in nearby Tulsa City; this growth halted around 1960 with the arrival of suburban residents nearLawnton Airport who demanded separate services within the larger city center market; however, the population has since increased again (to 25,000) due largely to new housing developments around town which have attracted people from surrounding rural areas
