On July 15, 1907, the Oklahoma Legislature passed a bill creating the State of Oklahoma. The new state was named in honor of General George Custer, who had lost his life in battle during the Mexican-American War. The General's death brought about a national memorialization of the war and led to passage of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1907. The act granted citizenship to Native Americans living in Oklahoma and allowed them to vote and own property.
