Lawton is a town in Custer County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The name "Lawton" is derived from the Choctaw words wal-itu (town) and tan-seh (place). The town was platted on November 3, 1887 by J.W. Lawler and Wm. Hines as a post office called "Lawn." A new post office was organized on December 1, 1887 under the name of "Lawrence." On July 6, 1907, the town lost its charter to become an incorporated village because it did not provide financial support for a village election that year. The town re-incorporated as Lawton on October 11, 1907 with a population of 620. The first store in Lawton opened in 1888. A school was built in 1889 and became known astheOklahoma State Normal School which later became University of Oklahoma; it closed in 1935. In 1906 there were 9 businesses in Lawton with $30 Connecticut currency each selling goods such as groceries, hardware etc.; only 2 of those continue to operate today: the hardware store and feed store which are now owned by Walmart Inc., and home improvement stores like Home Depot have replaced them over time Lawn had one newspaper which served both Lawton and Lawrence until 1910 when they merged into one paper called News OK In 1927 schools were closed due to lack of enrollment so local farmers started teaching their children farming skills thereby creating what would become known as lawtonsociety or LSO which still exists today

Lawton, Oklahoma is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 27,595 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County and home to the University of Central Oklahoma. The town was founded in 1881 by Colonel John Lawton as a post office called "Crowley". In 1907 it became the seat of Muskogee County when Tulsa replaced Muskogee as the county seat. The city lost its status as county seat after 1906 when Tulsa gained statehood and moved its government to that location. However, Lawton still remains the unofficial capital of Haskell County and has been so since 1912. The first settler in Lawton was Captain George Haggard who built a cabin on what is now Post Road NW in 1881. Other early settlers were Major James McDonald and his wife Margaret (née French). Mrs. McDonald raised six children in Lawton before moving them to Tulsa in 1885 because she could not find work there for her husband’s construction company expanding into new territory west of Tulsa. After he died in 1888, her three youngest children took over running their father’s business until he sold it to J C Smith & Brothers lumberyard operators near Tahlequah for $5,000 in 1903. That year saw also another important event when Judge Fenton Trougham bought all of present-day Haskell County from Paint Creek Indian Reservation for $10,000 cash considerations only four years after they had ceded their land back to the tribe following victorious U S Indian Wars campaigns against white settlement east of Arkansas River under Chief Joseph Bonin’s leadership with 2nd Lt Harry Wickersham leading an army probing towards that area including raids against lawless settlements along Arkansas River known then as “Indian Territory” about 20 miles southwest of Lawton where Company D US Army Infantry Battalion numbering around 100 men under Second Lieut Wickersham attacked some 4 frightened women and young child stealers from Cherokee Nation Reservation living undefended on White Settlement Rancho Grande but no loss resulted other than a few broken pottery pieces taken casually away during search which did nothing more than embarrassing local ladiesfolk but good news for military scouts later that day when finding these items hidden among stacks of burnedahah trees just beyond Wichita OK Cache National Monument boundary) Captain George Haggard's cabin still stands today on Post Road NW next to Crescent City Cafe across from Walmart
