Stephenson built his refinery on land that had been part of a trading post controlled by Wichita Chief Washita which he purchased from her husband, Major John Cushing for $5,000 in 1872. The town began as a small hamlet called Newton but grew rapidly due to jobs at Stephenson's refinery and other businesses established in the area during this time including Post Office (1875), banks (1878), lumber yards (1880-1902) and hotels (1912-present). In 1907 or 1908 Jock Sutherland opened up his first grocery store in Lawton which quickly became one ofthe most popular places to buy groceries in town because it was close to both the Stephenson Refinery and Phelps Drug Store where people could get their prescriptions filled without having them delivered right away! In 1915 Clyde Waddell opened up his second grocery store just south of First Street which soon replaced Sutherland’s store as the largest grocery store in town! All these stores helped drive Lawton’s growth even further throughout those years until finally reaching its current size today! lawtons fortunes changed drastically after World War II when many essential products needed for war production were produced here such as rubber and aluminum that madeLawton one ofthe most important cities within driving distance for many servicemen/women who needed work during wartime! In recent years there have been several expansion plans approved by City Council including plans for an additional library; another hospital; retail plaza across from old post office building along I-40 exit 527 South; redevelopment project for former jail site adjacent to First Street between Walmart Blvd./I-40 exit 527 South & Central Avenue); increased development around Bearden Park between Second & Third Streets; and even an attempt bylawtons business owners to bring light rail service into their city via private donations through fund raisers

Lawton, Oklahoma is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The name comes from nearby Lawton Lake. The original people who lived in what is now Lawton were the Wichita and Creek Nation's Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. They gathered around Lawton Lake for fishing and watercooling during their hunting trips in the area. They named their settlement after General William H. Lawton who fought against Mexican forces during the Texas Revolution in 1836. The first post office at Lawton was established on December 12, 1881, by John Wetherbee with Paddle River as his address. The first store was built near present day Court House Square in 1895 by Chas Ewing and Lillie Hodge Ketchum (wife of Jno.]). Lawton was founded in 1901 by J.W. Lawton, who with his brother-in-law, W.E. Sellers, developed the town on a tract of land that they purchased from the Wichita River Valley Indian tribe. The name "Lawton" comes from the Cherokee word "alawon," meaning "a place where corn is gathered." The town's first store was built in 1903 and John Fenton became its first mayor in 1905. In 1907, Lawton had its first school and within two years it had a population of thirty-six people. The city's only businesses were a grocery store and a post office until 1912 when an oil well was drilled near Lawton and new businesses began to open including a restaurant, barbershop and several stores that served as law offices for area attorneys. By 1922 there were over fifty businesses in Lawton with a population of one thousand five hundred people. In 1923 the city acquired an electric plant which allowed for more than seventy business to open up in downtown over the next decade including restaurants, hotels, automobile dealerships, hospitals and even a movie theater! It was during this time that Lawton experienced its most dramatic growth with dozens of factories coming online providing jobs for locals as well as truck drivers bringing goods into town from outlying villages
