In 1916, the first store opened in Lawton. The first bank Corporation was organized in 1917 in Lawton. There were also several small businesses starting up at this time including a grocery store, meat market and a millinery shop. In 1922, the first oil well was drilled nearLawton and production began soon afterwards bringing new life to the townspeople. By 1925, there were two churches located inLawnton with both being later renamed Simply Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church respectively
