Haley The company also produced tractors, radios, flour mills and other small machinery during this time In 1957 when Tulsa metropolitan area expanded into what would become Oklahoma City, then only a minor market for steelmaking companies outside of Wichita, Kansas due to its lack of railroads reaching Tulsa proper (the OKC metropolitan area had been created by combining four separate townships that made up Guthrie County): attorney Denny Hays decided that Lawton should get its own railroad station so his law firm could commute between Tulsa and home without having to stop at Wichita; he purchased three miles (4 km) of trackage from Union Pacific Railroad serving as Lawton's first depot The following year sawLawton's incorporation as a municipality with approval from the state legislature When Interstate 40 was built through central Oklahoma during the late 1960s most heavy manufacturing had moved out Of Central Oklahoma into new suburbs such as Norman or Shawnee but several large plants like Garland-Haley Steel & Machine Works remained until they closed around 2000 leaving behind an abandoned community full of empty buildings now known as "The Donbass". The name of the town derived from the Choctaw word "law" (a word meaning "to move") and tonk (a small stream). The first settlement in Lawton was made on December 12, 1873 by Capt. John A. Weems and his men while they were traveling west on Indian Territory Route 20. They named their new community after General James Hays Butler who had just been installed as Governor of Indian Territory following the Battle of Little Bighorn in October 1876. Captain Weems and his party arrived at Lawton about two weeks before Christmas 1873; however it did not take long for settlers to arrive and set up homes. By January 25, 1874 all but one of the original ten colonists had arrived in Lawton; four days later wagon trains came into town from all over Indian Territory bringing provisions and equipment for those who would settle here. In April 1875 a store was built by J.M.. Griggs and Wm Crain inside what is now known as Old Town Hall Square; this store served as a central post office until 1907 when US Post Office No. 2 was constructed outside of town limits nearpresent day Haskell Elementary School which became Lawton's first courthouse in 1908 In 1886 an oil well were drilled near present day Lawton and within two years there were pipelines brought into town by rail to provide drinking water for citizens . On December 12th 1898 lawrenters erected a frame schoolhouse which has been occupied continuously ever since . Mrs Geo Fenton donated land adjacent to Haskell Elementary School for use as a Agricultural College Laboratory during World War I . In 1922 when Tulsa State University opened its doors downtownLawton residents voted to become part of that university ; this vote was ratified on February 24th 1923 . During World War II many companies such as Ford Motor Company located their plants within city limits providing employment for many local citizens including Mr Fenton himself who worked at Ford’s Main Assembly Plant until his retirement in 1978 After World War II Local Manufacturing ended with jobs moving out to other parts of America due to technological advancements however some old fashioned skills still lingers such as hand tooling leather goods or fabricating items like bicycle frames etc... Today many people commute intoLawton each day through the townships of Northola/Muskogee or Tulsa where they work various offices

Lawton was founded in 1907 by J.W. Lawton and his wife, Lena. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1876 during the Indian Wars. In 1911, Lawton became the county seat of Lincoln County. The courthouse was completed in 1912 and served as the local government's headquarters until it burned in 1941. The building now houses a library.
