Lawton is a small town in Oklahoma located on the Arkansas River. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lawton, OK Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Lawton were French Canadians who arrived in 1824. They operated a fur trading post and built a log cabin on the north side of the Arkansas River. The first courthouse was built in 1835 and soon after, law courts opened up throughout central and northeastern Oklahoma Territory. In 1839, territorial Governor James K. Polk established Lawton as an Indian Agency to provide services to Native Americans living within its boundaries. In 1865, Asahel Willcox founded the townsite of Lawton just south of present-day downtown Lawton on what are now US Highway 85 and County Road 527A. By 1870, most of present-day Lawton had settled along US Highway 85 with about 100 residents living in tents or shacks near Circle M Casino & Resort when that casino was built in 1973 by Pinnacle Entertainment Corporation as part of its development of the music industry center region around Tulsa metropolitan area (see also: Pinnacle Place). The original Carnegie Library building was constructed in 1903–04 with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie; it served as one of two library buildings servingLawTON until 1939 when both structures were replaced by new brick buildings which still serve as LAWTON's primary library facility today (the other being Baptist United Methodist Church which burned down on July 6th, 1993).
