Lawton is a city in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. The first permanent settler in Lawton was J.W. Griggs in 1881. A post office called Lawton was established in 1903, and remained in operation until 1907. The first store in Lawton was built by Wm. Hargrave and opened on Main Street on October 15, 1903. In 1911 the town had a population of 350 people and a schoolhouse operated by the Methodist Episcopal Church with 12 students from 9 to 14 years of age. In 1927 the Post Office moved to its present location on 2nd Avenue South adjacent to the current CIBC bank building; it remains there today as one of Lawtons most important institutions and an important part of local commerce and culture

The first modern firearms sights were designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. The Conte rifle sights used a red and green circle on a white background to indicate the aiming points. This was replaced in 1824 with the Girard crosshairs which consisted of a black triangle over an orange triangle, similar to those still used today.

In 1881, a group of Germans named Berg made their home in what is now Lawton. After a few years, they decided to move and founded a community called Heringerstadt. The town started off as a small farming town with only a handful of residents. However, over time, it grew into one of the biggest towns in Oklahoma. In 1907, Lawton became the county seat for Stephens County and has been its center ever since. It was also during this time that oil began to be discovered in nearby Sherman County and people from Lawton began searching for ways to get involved. In 1925, Lawton voted to become an independent city. This decision helped set the tone for how things would eventually change in town – lawlessness would soon become anthing of the past! In 1932, when statehood was granted to Oklahoma, Lawton became part of the new state and quickly gained some impressive rights and freedoms! Today, it remains one of the most vibrant and thriving cities in OKC!
Lawton was founded in 1881 as a small town on the outskirts of what is now Oklahoma City. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, and by 1907 it had reached a population of over 10,000 people. In 1916, Lawton became the capital of Oklahoma Territory. It remained so until 1907 when territorial government was moved to Tulsa.
