In 1907, when Lawton was founded, it was one of only two towns in Oklahoma that had not yet been destroyed by Indians during their frontier days. Firearms were an important part of law enforcement then and remain so today. The first gun store opened in Lawton in 1909, and until recently it was the most popular store in town. It sold firearms to farmers, ranchers, hunters, and other rural residents. At one time it was also the largest gun store east of the Mississippi River! In 1951, however, the store closed its doors for good after being forced to sell guns to criminals because local law enforcement couldn’t keep up with demand for weapons. In 1961 Gun Owners of America (GOA) formed a club within LAWTON FARMERS & RANCHERS ASSOCIATION (LFRA). This club purchased all existing firearms from the old store and redistributed them amongmembership members across Oklahoma. GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA remains an important force within LAWTON today as it continues to advocate for responsible firearm ownership

The name "Lawton" was given to the community by General George Armstrong Custer as he rode into town after capturing Kiowa Chief Red Cloud's village near present-day lawrence, Kansas on July 24, 1876. At that time, Fort Washakie bled out and most of Indian Territory lay south of Wichita, Kansas. The first post office in Lawton was established in 1881. In 1907 it became a city with a population of 10,000 people when it annexed the neighboring town of Morningside. In 1923 Lawton annexed Okmulgee which had a population of 16,500 people at that time. Oklahoma City annexed Lawton in 1957; however, since then the two cities have been generally considered separate municipalities within Tulsa Metropolitan Area (TMA). In 2002 Tulsa voters approved an ordinance annexing all unincorporated territory east and north of Interstate 35 between Guthrie Road and I-44 just south of downtown Tulsa to make way for new housing developments built by developer Raycom Corporation on what were once agricultural land parcels owned by Wacoal Independent School District No. 1 (now Aliant Energy) east and west of downtown Tulsa

Lawton is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The town was founded in 1875 by Colonel George Lawton and his wife, Martha Bowers Lawton. It was named after General John Sibley who fought in the Mexican-American War and then became Governor of Texas. The site of today'sLawton was first settled by Methodists in 1875. Colonel George Lawton (1815-81) arrived there with twelve hardy men from Kentucky to start what would become one of the largest towns in Oklahoma Territory. On November 17, 1876, Lawton participated in a national strike for voting rights for Indian citizens before the territorial legislature met at Tahlequah. He later served as justice of the peace and mayor of Lawnton from 1879 to 1880. The first post office opened at Lawton on April 14, 1886. At its peak during World War II it had a population of over 6,000 people; however only 2% remained when hostilities ended six years later on September 16th 1945 due to war-time restrictions placed onOklahoma towns by then territorial governor Harry Hughes Blount Sr.. In 1951 Lawsontown east of town merged into neighboring Muskogee City; but this merger did not take place until 1977 because residents wanted their own independent city hall building which they built and dedicated that year prior to that merger becoming legal under state statute In 1966 the present day downtown area around State Capitol Drive were completed following land acquisition adjacent to US 71 Business Loop south of town limits within which developed much more densely than older areas outside core downtown including neighborhoods now known as Wilson Heights/Goudreau Heights/Bourke Heights etcetera.; these developing areas are still quite dense today with few empty lots remaining throughout even upscale neighborhoods such as those near State Capitol Drive downtown despite rapid growth since 1966 as result largely due again to heavy industry development especially oil & gas exploration & production over time
