In Lawton, Oklahoma, the gun safe has a long and storied history. The first gun safe was built in 1892 by J.W. “Red” Hogue. It consisted of two doors that opened into a single room with four shelves on one side and four shelves on the other side. The safe was used to store pistols and shotguns. In 1903, A&P Safe & Security began manufacturing safety safes for handguns in Lawton. The company became successful and continued to makesafes until 1918 when it merged with fellow firearm manufacturer Hogue Safety Company to form Red Hogue Gun Safes Incorporated (RHGSI). The RHGSI company manufacturedGun safes from 1902 until 1938 when it merged with Wm Fenton Manufacturing Company to form Wm Fenton-Hogue Firearms Corporation (WFHCC). At WFHCC, the company manufactured firearms including revolvers, shotguns, rifles and pistol safes. From 1938-1962, the company produced handguns only. In 1962, WFHCC merged with Colt Corporation to become Colt Firearms Industries (CFI). CFI continued production of handguns until 1983 when it was sold to Beretta USA Incorporated (Beretta) which discontinued production of handguns in 1996. Today, Red Hogue Gun Safes is still in business as an importer/distributor of handgun safes products worldwide
