Lawton is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 21,874 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. Lawton was founded in 1881 by John W. Lawton and named for him. The first post office in Lawton was established on November 15, 1881, and was called "Lawn". It changed its name to "Lawton" on December 12, 1881. The town was platted on July 3, 1907 by J. Henson Ford and Jules Schieffer from a land grant given to them by President James Kossuth. The original town had no school and only twelve homes. A store and two churches were built in the town while construction of the State Capitol began in 1911 near what is now Days Inn & Suites (now Embassy Suites). In 1924–1925, Lawton Elementary School became one of thirteen schools within Tulsa Public Schools which were merged into Tulsa City School District No. 1; this merger created a centralized education system for Tulsa which remains in place to this day. In 1975–1976, when Tulsa City School District No. 2 became operational following the consolidation of all school districts within Tulsa proper under Mayor George Custer’s administration,[citation needed] Lawton Elementary School closed due to budget cuts precipitated by the district’s divestiture from municipal control that took place during his tenure as mayor.[2] However, it reopened as an annex to nearby Westbrook High School after being vacated by Westbrook upon their closure;[3] Westbrook rejoined the city school district upon reopening as part ofGray Administration's efforts to consolidate all Greene County public schools into one comprehensive educational system effective September 1st 1977). On January 1st 1954,[4] Lawsontown Community Church located east of downtown Lawnton opened its doors with Pastor Leland Day officiating services over 50 members conducted outdoors on a warm October morning giving rise then and now known as “Church Day”;[5][6][7][8] prior thereto meetings were held at various locations including: Kipling Hall on Third Street north of downtown since February 3rd 1902 (closed due to lack of space) First Baptist Church south side between McClain Avenue/East Main Street – also home until 1978 First Methodist Episcopal Church west side between McClain Avenue/East Main Street – present day lawson Arena across US Highway 59 from Orchard Park Presbyterian Church serving as community center until recently (closed) having been remodeled several times including most notably becoming Fort Worth Arena type facility when purchased bylawtonsoccerclub inc.[9][10] This period marked an important milestone not only forLawnton but alsoOklahoma City specifically because both cities had previously experienced large-scale Consolidation movements taking place throughout much rural Oklahoma Territory during this time period resulting ultimately in many different types or arenas being erected within their respective communities providing access geographically speaking yet often remaining relatively unaffordable or unenjoyable using today's standards
