Lawton is a city in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. Lawton is located on the Arkansas River and is one of several cities along that river that were founded by settlers from Arkansas during the early days of what would become Oklahoma. The area now known as Lawton was first settled by men from Arkansas in 1873. The town site was chosen because it had good water availability and a crossing over the Arkansas River. The town name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where people gather." A post office called Lawton was established in 1875, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1907, a new courthouse was built within the limits of Lawton; this building still stands today and is used as a municipal meeting hall. In 1907, Tulsa became the state capital; however, lawlessness characterized much of Oklahoma so Governor James Buchanan appointed John Soddy to fix up some laws relating to counties which Tulsa had included within its boundaries since 1907 without properly consulting with those affected. When Soddy delivered his report back to Buchanan on October 15th he found many issues with Tulsa's situation- most notablywith regard to land titles- which led him to order Wichita lawyer George Bird Griggs to come into Tulsa and help draftective reforms for allOklahoma counties governor Edmondson issued Executive Order No 4333 on October 21st 1907 creating Haskell County provisional government under Griggs' leadership including duties such as appointing judges and justices etc... This document formalized local selfgovernment for Haskell County becoming effective November 1st 1907 when Territorial Laws (No 9) took effect following passage of OK General Election held November 3rd article I section 8 Section 6 giving residents thereof direct representation in lieu of territorial legislature or board Of Education... Griggs served as provisional governor until 1909 when he moved away due to health concerns...In 1915 Griggs organized OK State Constitutional Convention which drafted new state Constitution.. Lawton is a small town in Nowata County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 551 at the 2010 census. It was named after General George Lawton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War. The history of Lawton goes back to 1881 when A.D. Lawton founded the townsite of Lawton on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1903, he donated land to build a water tower that still stands today in downtown Lawton. The first post office at Lawton opened on July 1, 1907. In 1911, General George Custer was killed at Little Bighorn near Medicine Bow and his unit came within three miles of Lawnton before being called off because of it; this event is cited as one reason for the name change from "Lawnton" to "Custer" following World War II when manyOklahoma soldiers were stationed in nearby Wichita Falls and Fort Worth due to wartime production quotas set by the U.S.). After World War II ended, most Oklahomans moved away from Tulsa or Phoenix so they could start new lives and businesses while their homes were kept intact; accordingly, there has been no effort by either party to re-name the town after General Custer since his death occurred over 100 years ago! The post office closed effective September 15, 1975 due to budget cuts enacted by then-Governor Denny Hogg as part of his efforts to reduce government spending throughout much of Oklahoma during what would become known as a “recession” period across most Western states during that time frame ( See also: How did Oklahoma's economy change during Governor Denny Hogg's term?). However, local citizens continued to use USPS ZIP Codes until November 1995 when all mail services were discontinued statewide due primarily to cost overruns associated with building an online system which required more expensive computers and software than had been initially projected! Lawton was founded in 1861 by a group of Mormon pioneers. The town grew quickly, and in 1879 it became the county seat of Kiowa County. In 1907, Lawton incorporated as a city. In 1960, the city was renamed Lawton after General George Custer.
