The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Iowa who named it after their home state. At the time, Oklahoma Territory was still a part of Mexico and there were no laws or government structures in place to govern towns or counties; settlers simply formed committees to create local ordinances and maps were drawn up accordingly. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in Lawton in 1887. The community rapidly grew thanks to its strategic location near major roads and railroad lines and its easy access to irrigation water which led to rapid growth in agriculture and industry. In 1905, Lawton formed a school board with twelve members, which supervised public schools within the limits of the townspeople. This innovation would become an important factor in promoting education within the small community as well as developing later infrastructure such as libraries and hospitals. In 1915, when Oklahoma became an all-white state following passage of the All-White Law (Oklahoma Territory had been all white until 1907), many black residents moved into Lawton due to its good agricultural prospects. African Americans did not have voting rights nor did they own property within Haskell County – they were limited to working on farms outside of Lawton during their day-to-day lives. However, this didn't stop law enforcement from trying to enforce segregationist policies within the small town; for example, during World War II German soldiers living inside Lawton were arrested for looting Allied forces supplies while residents watched passively from their homes! Despite this challenge, throughout most of its history Lawton has proudly been an open Door Community where everyone regardless race or ethnicity has been welcome!
