Lawton is a small town in the Oklahoma Panhandle, located about 30 miles east of Tulsa. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County, Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Lawton was James Fenton, who arrived on horseback in 1881. By 1885, there were 10 residents and 2 businesses in the town. According to one account, when Fenton died his Widow “returned home with her four children and a bag of clothes” which she shared with her husband’s family for five years until they moved away again. In 1907, Grady Sells opened what became known as The Old Store at Fourth and Elm Streets. This store served as a center for local commerce for many years before it closed its doors in 1976. In that year Lawton had a population of just 712 people but by 1990 it had grown to over 12,000 people thanks to various businesses opening up around the town during that time period including two hospitals (Oklahoma Baptist Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital) as well as several schools such as North High School and Lawton Junior College (now Lawton Community College). The growth of Lawton also led to increased commercial development on Main Street which included several new stores, restaurants and bars along with an expansion of existing businesses such as The Lumberjacks restaurant which replaced an old mill complex that burned down in 1984; Pioneer Credit Union; First Republic Bank; KFC; JCPenney; Ladd-Peebles department store; Cherokee Gas Company pipeline truck stop Additionally several churches have been built throughout the decades including First Baptist Church which was built in 1951 followed byawn Southern Methodist Church (built in 1955) while Iglesia Cristiana de Jesús (sponsored by Spanish Immigrants from Mexico) has been active since 1922. As recently as 2001 Businessman/Mayor Don Stoker announced plans for $10 million dollars towards renovation and expansion of downtown including adding more parking spaces centralizing services within buildings removing some streetscape obstructions and improving street lighting making downtown much more welcoming environment for business owners looking to do their business within this thriving community Thanks Don! Today Lawton continues to grow rapidly with numerous new businesses starting up or expanding operations all vying for attention – whether it be inside or outside of our municipal Limits! With so Much going on these days I thought it would be helpful if I took you on a brief tour through some key aspects that make up this vibrant community today: 1) Downtown is constantly growing due to developments happening around our limits 2) There are multiple popular shopping destinations located nearby 3) Our Schools are doing great given how busy they get here 4) Most importantly we love our citizens very much here & we look forward to continuing providing quality service
