Lawton is a small city located in east Oklahoma, just north of the Wichita Mountains. The population was 7,121 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Oklahomas County and part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Lawton in 1881 as a postal station on the old Pony Express line between Guthrie, Kansas, and Tellico City, Oklahoma. He named it after himself and his father-in-law, General James K. Polk Jr., who had been Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. The original town plat included a square block with a post office and three stores on its north side and two stores on its south side. A courthouse was built in 1911; it now functions as the Lawton Municipal Center. One of Lawtons successors as mayor was Wm Hoss Pyle (1893-1947). Pyle helped to develop Lawtons downtown district into one of its most vibrant neighborhoods with many restaurants, nightlife venues, shops, and services available to residents. In 1938 he also spearheaded an effort to rename Lawtons civic center after then Mayor George Condon's daughter, Eleanor Roosevelt (1913-2008). Today the Eleanor Roosevelt Civic Center serves as home to several museums including those associated with local history collections such as the Oral History Program at OU School of Journalism & Mass Communication and University Archives OKLAHOMA which preserves primary source documents related to state government in Oklahoma from 1907 until present

Lawton, Oklahoma is a small town in the Tulsa metropolitan area. It is located on the northeast corner of Tulsa County and Muskogee County, about 25 miles southwest of Tulsa. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. The townsite was settled by pioneers in 1892 when oil wells were drilled in this area. A post office was established there in 1893. By 1905 Lawton had a school and two churches. In 1907 it had a general store, two newspapers, and a grocery store. In 1912 the first too water main was installed to bring water to Lawton from an underground stream. In 1922 the first automobile dealership opened in Lawton; it became known as "the Buggy Place." The slogan for that dealership was "Buy Now or Build Later." The plant closed in 1949 but reopened as an auto parts store in 1951-53 before closing again for good in 1957-58. The first courthouse in Lawton was built near what is now its high school; it opened on October 15, 1903. That building served until 1911 when another courthouse replaced it due to being destroyed by fire while under construction near what is now Asha Drive near Interstate 44A (now I-44). In 1916 one of the first airfields west of Tulsa (now Nickajack Field) was opened at Lawton; it served as training ground for military pilots during World War I and World War II. Lawton was founded in 1876 by Nelson L. Lawton and his wife, Emma. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1887 while on a military campaign in India. When the railroad arrived in Lawton, business boomed as people traveled to the new town for work. A post office was established at Lawton in 1880, and the name of the town changed to Lawton-on-the-Arkansas Railway Station in 1907. The station closed down in 1957.
