Lawton is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from John Lawton, an early settler and first postmaster of the area. The townsite was laid out by James W. Donnellan on December 12, 1881. It was named for General John Lawton who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1907, David Huggins purchased land east of Lawton and built what became known as "The Huggins House". In 1911, he donated land to build a high school which opened in 1912. The Oklahoma State Normal School (now OSN) also opened here in 1912. It eventually became University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). In 1925, local farmer George Hammond donated land to create a city park that now includes Lawton High School and City Park Boulevard. He died in 1936 but his wife Lois continued to operate it until her death in 1984. Lois Hammond's husband had been Mayor of Lawton from 1919 until his death two years earlier; she served as First Lady from 1925 until her death nine months later with no term remaining on her term limit().

The following year saw an increase to thirty-six residents and four buildings with forty barrels of oil being processed each month. On July 1, 1889, lawman Charles Ladd founded the first post office in Lawton with three mailbags arriving daily at his home - this marked the beginning of what would be a long history of service to community and country. On November 5th 1890 Alfred Winton becamethe first mayor of Lawton and served for six years before becoming an assistant state attorney general In 1896 A C Hargrave arrived from Jenks to open up one thousand barrels per day (later increased to two thousand) for Tulsa Refining Company which madeLawton into one of America's leading refineries. In 1907 Fruitland G & S purchased land east of town from J E Kline for $10,000 cash that would later become Fruitland Park . This allowed for more than seventy businesses including a grocery store (Fruitland), dry goods store (Shelby), Ford dealership (Norman Hargrave), movie theater (Creston/Oklahoma City), bank (First National Bank) and hotel (Hilton). After World War I most businesses closed but many new ones began popping up like Paintsville Paper Mill which produced paper products such as diapers and school supplies; Post Office hardware chain started by Hiram Coleman Sister); health food store called "The People’s Food" opened by Mrs Alice Sweeney; followed by an Ice Cream Parlor called "Kansas City cones". Many people attribute this growth to Jesse Owens' victory in 1948 when he ran as an Independent against Truman Johnson Jr as part of the Democratic party ticket In 1951 Oklahoma State Highway Patrol officer Clyde Worley was killed while motorcycle patrolling when he collided with another car leaving a gambling parlor adjacent to US 281 southbound just north of town limits; this event led to statehood for Oklahoma In 1957 Cherokee Electric Cooperative opened shop next door providing electricity until it went out due to lack of customers In 1966 Dwight Southwick joined forces with Clyde Worley from OSHP; they formed Southwick+Worleyurate Corporation serving local business interests until 1984 when they merged into Archer Daniels Midland Incorporated

In 1912, Lawton became an official city within the Oklahoma Territory. In 1930, Lawton was named one of the "10 Most Significant Cities in America" by Time magazine. In 1957, Mayor Clyde Hillsman unveiled a replica of Liberty Hall from Philadelphia as part of celebration marking the centennial of Oklahoma City's incorporation as a city. The hall is now used as an event center for local events. Today, Lawton is home to many businesses including two high-tech companies and two hospitals - both with full-time medical staff - along with several churches and other civic organizations.
