Lawton who had been wounded during the Mexican-American War and then served as military governor of Indian Territory until his death in 1865. At that time all land east of the Muscogee River south of Decatur were sold to prospectors for $1 per acre (or $5 per km²). The first post office in Lawton was established on December 5, 1870; it was renamed Jacksonville on October 8, 1871. The first store in Lawton opened on October 22nd, 1872 and became known as the "Jacksonville Store". On February 7th 1890 C M & S RR constructed a line from Lawtons west side depot to McAlester which made it possible to purchase goods necessary for daily life such as flour and bacon at lower prices than available at home or stores elsewhere on the frontier. On July 15th 1907 Wm Fenton opened what would becomethe first enclosed shopping mall in Oklahoma when he erected an artificial water main and pump station near present daylawnton high school which allowed him to sell groceries direct to consumers without having them transported miles away to McAlester's First National Bank building where they were purchased by customers before being delivered into their homes
