Lawton is a city in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. The name "Lawton" comes from the Wichita language and means "place where people live." The first settlement in what is now Haskell County was made by Webster and his brother Jameson in 1868. They named their new town after General Andrew Lawtey who had fought in the American Civil War. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn and wheat. In 1875, Lawton was organized as a town under the laws of Kansas. In 1907, when Oklahoma became a state, Lawton became its second county seat and remained so until 1959 when it was moved to McAlester. During World War II, Lawton served as a military base for Tank Battalion 141st Infantry Regiment (the "Oklahoma Warriors"). After the war, many businesses established themselves in Lawton including an oil refinery and several banks which continue to operate today. In 1957, the first high school in Lawton opened with grades 9-12 In 2002-2003 City Council decided that they would not renew their lease on Creekview Elementary School following allegations of child sexual abuse by then Principal Tom Gorman which had been going on for almost two years before that point The City of Tulsa offered to purchase Creekview from the city council for $2 million but Mayor Mick Cornett refused to sell because he felt that it would be better served within Tulsa’s public schools system On November 7th 2013 City Council voted 5-0 to allow private property owner Bob Hickey to build an amusement park on land adjacent to Creekview Elementary School located off US Highway 169 south of downtownLawnton annexation passed with only one vote against it

Lawton is a city in the Oklahoma Territory, United States. The population was 3,819 at the 2010 census. It is the capital of Lawton County. The town was founded by settlers in 1867. It became an important military and trading post during the American Civil War. The post was abandoned in 1865 from lack of supplies and troops available to garrison it. In 1907, the first Territorial courthouse was built in Lawton; it served until 1921 when a new courthouse was erected in Tulsa, later renamed Oklahoma City. In 1907, The Oklahoman reported "the Indianola Mining District has firm control over Lawton" as "the men who own or operate the mines have not hesitated to make themselves very rich". In 1916, oil drilling began near Lawton with major results being seen for a time as soon as 1915-16 production reached $2 million annually which led to renewed interest in this region for development purposes although some people still preferboil water over drillers equipment The city limits were expanded eastward on both sides of US 96 starting at milepost 6 (now Creek) on November 1, 1907 and ended west of that point on December 31, 1912 when they were extended south past Muskogee Lake extending all the way to Canadian River canyon just north of present day Reno Township on February 24th 1913
